Kid Crafts: Beading for Beginners Part I

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Marcel Vigh Three or four years ago, I was a bead fanatic. I loved beading and I made bead animals all the time. After I had completed more than hundred bead animals and creatures, I gave it up. I got bored with. A few weeks ago, it came to my mind and I decided to start beading again. After I’ve made some animals, I noticed that I still love beading. It’s just fantastic! So, let’s get started!First, you’ll need:beadswire (or nylon fishing line)pattern By the way, what do you use, wire or nylon fishing line? Formerly, I used fishing line, because I found it easier to use. And it’s easier to use indeed, because its end won’t kink. However, it has no definite shape. The animal won’t stand on its feet. The wired animals will stand. You can bend them as you like. And it’s a great advantage! So, I would suggest the wire, but very thin wire. Importantif you’re making an animal that has to be round, 3D or plump (like a penguin), always use nylon fishing line, because the wire will be almost completely flat. I have a good example to prove this:Once, I decided to make a bead owl, which was rounded on the example picture. After I finished it (using wire), it looked like a bat and not an owl. It was completely flat.I was very angry and I scolded the book. Later, I read the text beside the owl which said, that use nylon fishing line. The next day, I made the owl again, using nylon fishing line. When I finished, it looked like exactly on the picture. It was fully round. So, use fishing line for rounded and 3D animals. And what about beads? I’ve been using seed (small) beads for the body of the animals since I started beading. There are also long beads (I don’t know the proper name), use them for wings and sometimes for legs. Seed Beads:These are the basic beads that we use for beading. They usually make up the body of an animal. Nowadays, you can buy them in whatever color, size and shape you want. I use quiet small (I don’t know the exact size) and round seed beads. Bigger Beads:These are much bigger than the seed beads. I usually use them for the eyes of an animal. However, use them whenever you want to highlight something. Long Beads:The size of the long beads is between the seed beads and the ‘bigger beads’. I use them for wings, legs and sometimes for some other parts of the animal’s body. So, in the next part, I’m going to write about the basic beading techniques. To learn more about it click here! Oolong Tea - A Healthy Refreshing Drink

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Ross MacIver Green tea is often touted as a wonder drink providing all sorts of health benefits. Studies have shown that green tea can prevent cancer, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system and reduce hypertension. Although green tea gets the spotlight, many of these same health benefits can be attributed to all sorts of tea including oolong. Tea is, after all, tea. The only difference between green, oolong, and black tea is the way it has been processed after harvesting. White tea is a little bit different because of the way it is grown, but all tea is from the same plant - Camelia sinensis. And this plant has naturally occurring antioxidants that are beneficial to human health. Antioxidants are also present in other types of food such as nuts, fruits, vegetables, and wines. They are good for disease prevention by combating free radicals - substances in the body linked to cancer, Parkinson’s disease, senile and drug-induced deafness, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s. There are several components in tea that act as antioxidants including catechins, flavanoids, and polyphenols. White, Green or Oolong? Oolong tea is produced by allowing the tea leaves to oxidize for a short time after picking. Oxidation is the process which makes the leaves turn dark on exposure to oxygen. Oolong is semi-oxidized; black tea is fully oxidized; and green tea is un-oxidized. Fresh tea leaves are high in catechins. Processing the tea reduces these levels, so the more the tea is oxidized the lower the catechin levels. This means that white tea has the highest levels of catechins closely followed by green tea. Catechins are the media darling of green tea promoters and usually receive the most coverage when discussing the health benefits of tea. There is one point, however, which is often overlooked: As the levels of catechins decrease during oxidation, the levels of theaflavins and thearubigins increase. These two substances are found in higher concentrations in oolong and black tea than in green tea and have anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. A 2001 Chinese study indicated that the antioxidant properties of green tea and black tea are equal. So it appears that oxidation does not eliminate the health properties of tea, but simply reduces one type of antioxidant while increasing other health-promoting compounds. So is Oolong Good for You? It is safe to say that all tea is good for you, but since we are particularly interested in oolong, let’s see what the medical literature has to say. Diabetes - Oolong tea may be an effective adjunct to oral hypoglycemic agents in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Eczema - Japanese researchers reported that patients with a form of eczema improved after drinking a liter of oolong tea daily. Allergies - Two catechin derivatives (C-1 and C-2) with potent antiallergic activity were isolated from Taiwanese oolong tea. Bacterial infections - Oolong tea polyphenols strongly inhibited the enzyme activities of some types of streptococci. Cavities - Oolong tea polyphenolic compounds could be useful for controlling dental caries. Obesity - Consumption of oolong tea stimulates both EE and fat oxidation in normal weight men. Cancer - Oolong tea extract has a chemopreventive action against hepatocarcinogenesis. Great stuff! Drinking oolong tea will make you healthier, live longer, be more beautiful and have great teeth! The Bottom Line Drink oolong tea for your health, but don’t lose sight of this simple fact - people have been drinking tea for thousands of years because it is a great tasting beverage. Sit back, relax, and savour the sensations as you sip this wonderful drink. It’s good for the soul, and what’s good for the soul is certainly good for the body.__________________________________ References: J. Agric. Reading About IRAs Can Open the Door to Your Future

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Scott Brown If you are like millions of Americans, you have spent several years saving your hard-earned cash. However, most of the time a simple interest-earning savings account is not enough! If you intend to prepare adequately for your future, you need to investigate the many options for investing your money. Because there are so many choices for investing, it is necessary to find the right mix of investments into which you should place your money. Simply investing in long-term CDs (certificates of deposit) will earn you returns above what a savings account can provide. By spending some time reading, you will learn the basics of investments such as IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts), Roth IRAs, CDs, stock and bond portfolios, 401ks and other options. Lets talk about why IRAs are different. IRAs are not simply vehicles for investing cash, much like a savings account. An IRA is a combination of investments which earn you funds for retirement. An IRA can be stocks, bonds, money market accounts and even CDs. IRAs are a great option for most people, because there is a significant tax advantage to investing now and paying taxes later. Because you are investing pre-tax dollars when you contribute to an IRA you will most likely be able to stretch your investing dollars further than if you were to select other options. Naturally, you will eventually have to pay taxes when that saved money is withdrawn. It is important to keep this in mind when making the decision to open an IRA account. Roth IRAs operate a bit different as an investing tool. These IRA accounts require the investing of post-tax dollars. While you may not be able to invest quite as much as a standard IRA, you will not be taxed upon withdrawal. Anyone who is under age 70.5 is eligible to open an IRA account. Those who are not given retirement benefits through their job are able to deduct the funds they are investing annually into their IRA. Roth IRAs have more stringent investing limits however, depending upon income. Roth contributions are also never tax deductible. Because our parents generally held jobs which provided methods for investing in the future, and many depend on Social Security and pension checks each month, we can learn from their mistakes in some cases. The key to a successful retirement is to being investing as early as possible, and to thoroughly investigate and compare all of the investing options available. Self Employed Unsecured Loans

Monday, October 15th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christian_Phelps]Christian Phelps Not very long ago, the self employed people were treated as having no credit history and it was very difficult to obtain loan even for trivial purposes. The scenario is changing in the favor of enterprising individuals in the UK and their credit is being accepted and validated more readily. Even the amount of interest is not as high as it used to be and this lot of businessmen is being seen in a new light altogether. There is a new concept in the making there are especially designed loans for the self employed. This is to cater to the special requirements that they may have. These people might need funds to setup a new business or to expand an existing business. What differentiates these people from regular employment holders is the instability of their profits. Their incomes might vary from one month to the other drastically. Due to this, there is a greater risk perceived in the loans to the self employed. In return, the loans for the self employed offer tailor made solutions which cater to their special requirements. To this effect, the loans for the self employed have introduced concepts like overpayment, underpayment and payment holidays. So, unlike regular loan payers who are required to pay a definite amount at the beginning of every month, the self employed may overpay, ie, pay more than their requisite amount in a certain month and then underpay, i.e., pay less than the amount in another month. They may also enjoy payment holidays, so that they may take a leave from payment for a certain number of months after a regular payment for some months. The loans may be secured or unsecured. Unsecured loans, due to the risk involved, are attained for a slightly higher interest rate though owing to the stiff competition in the lending industry, this rate is no longer much higher. The exact rate depends upon various factors like the credit history of the lender, references for the lender and how secure the lender feels with the economic stability of the borrowers business. To hedge the risk in the unsecured loans, the lender requires an assessment of the borrowers income and the payment ability before sanction of the loan. This assessment may be on the basis of a self certification or through certified accountants. These brief the income of the borrower on an yearly basis. Even in the case of a self certification, sometimes, the lender may require the certification to be signed by the borrowers accountant. Self employed loans can be raised for any amounts ranging from 3000 to 250,000. This amount might be slightly lower in the case of an unsecured loan but normally if the credit history and the income figures are good, any amount can be raised. The change in the perception towards unsecured loans for self employed can be also attributed to advances in technology and better underwriting. Sometime ago, it was not possible to find any records and an absence of credit history amounted to a bad credit history. Now since these records are shared on line, all credit transactions are open to scrutiny. If the borrower gets a good reference, it becomes that much easy to find a loan at a much better interest rate. With more options available, the self employed may not anymore take the first loan option that comes their way but can make detailed comparison and then decide upon the best available option. Christian Phelps is a Masters in Accounting and Financial Management from Lancaster University Management School . He has been working with loan for self employed since his academics got over. The Complexity Of A European Unions Marketing Plan

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Kadence Buchanan Many marketing experts argue that marketing is a logical process with a natural structure that can be viewed primarily as a method of understanding the marketing environment; using the marketing mix; developing a marketing plan -based upon the use of the marketing mix; implementing a plan based on the selected strategy; and finally, using a control method to ensure that the strategy is adhered to. This marketing process is reviewed and evaluated regularly and modifications are made to the use of the marketing mix tactics in order to take into account any possible market change that might impact upon an organization’s competitiveness. This view of marketing seems to suggest that many of the marketing theories employed by multinational enterprises are international in scope and have global consequences. The EU market constitutes a different marketplace if examined in terms of the various cultures that co-exist, the multiple levels of competition, and the organization strategies used in order to penetrate its markets. Although these differences and their implications interfere with business planning, the E.U. is considered as an opportunity by numerous companies that decide to expand to other markets by using the appropriate internationalization strategies and competing with major global players in terms of sales, profits, market shares and organizational momentum. A core issue in marketing theory is the growth and importance of networking and interaction. According to experts, the way in which administrative units, companies, and non-profit organizations (NGOs) develop, is directly related with their type of interaction and consequently the networks formed to gain commercial advantage in domestic or foreign markets. These networks can use similar subcontractors or components, share research and development costs, or operate within the same governmental framework. Clearly the EU, a trading block with no internal barriers, creates its own elite sub-networks. Collaborations in aerospace, vehicle manufacturing or engineering have all sponsored the development of a European outlook, which is based upon each participant’s abilities and expertise. This recently adopted approach of networking and marketing interoperability between companies demonstrates how important it is today for any type of manager or project coordinator to know who takes the decisions in the E.U. level and who can be approached from the E.U. administrative units, in order for a specific network to adequately present its interests and work towards their accomplishment. The E.U. is a rich, diverse market, with a vibrant and varied cultural heritage. This means that although there has been a harmonization process within the 25 member states as a result of the E.U.’s formation, great differences still exist and help shape everyday practices and processes. Rather than businesses being simpler as a result of this economic and trade union, it is recognized that due to heavy regulation and bureaucracy, the E.U. needs to communicate itself effectively to all, as a unique supranational player of our global village. The new E.U. profile has not yet been introduced successfully and due to the audiences’ diverse backgrounds, any attempt can prove to be highly complex. Especially if someone considers that Europeans tend, in general, to have their cultural differences recognized and most of their political and social networks are based on extremely important historical instances, the firms that recognize this challenge and adequately “package” their offer have a good chance of developing a successful marketing plan to meet the diverse E.U. citizens’ needs. Online Pharmacy - Revolutionizing the Concept of Pharmacy

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_Dcosta] Steve Dcosta The Internet has ushered in an era of competition where consumer is the king and there is an eternal fight for a fair share in the market amongst the commercial establishments. The pharmacies are also fighting a business battle in cyberspace. The trend of online pharmacies is catching up vary rapidly amongst the patients. The reasons behind the revolutionary success of online pharmacy trade could be summed up in the following words The convenience with which the online pharmacies offer the drugs to the patients at their doorsteps is the major USP of the virtual pharmacies. The online pharmacies even offeronline prescription for the drugs that are legally required to be taken only after prescription from a qualified doctor. The online drugs offered by the online pharmacies are generally much cheaper. The online pharmacy means cheap pharmacy requiring just a PC and the Internet connection. The reduced cost of investment means cheap drugs for the consumers. With virtually no cost on setting up infrastructure, the online pharmacies invest huge sums of money on buying drugs in bulk, which come cheaper. This benefit is ultimately transferred to the consumer. The online pharmacies are swarming the cyberspace and there is an intense competition in the virtual world. Obviously, competition translates into more competitive prices and better quality of drugs. But a strong criticism is also prevalent against the trend of online pharmacies. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not recognize online pharmacies. Therefore, it is illegal to sell online prescription drugs in the US. The various online pharmacies soliciting business from the US are doing it at their own peril. The basic premise behind this opposition stems from the fact that a lot of these virtual drug stores sell fake and counterfeit drugs in the name of discount pharmacy. Moreover, the FDA does not recognize the practice of online prescriptions and favor the physical verification of the patients by a qualified doctor, which is always suspect in case of online pharmacies. Wood Turning - Three Little Cuts Do All The Work

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Darrell Feltmate Mathematicians tell us that all curves can actually be broken down so small that for all intents and purposes they are made up of straight lines. Well, it is hard in the reality of life to get anything made of lines that small, so for a wood turner, three simple lines are all it takes to make the myriad of shapes that come off a lathe. The cuts that are made are just a straight cut, a convex curve and a concave curve. These can used in a variety of ways to make almost anything that can be thought of for a lathe. Consider a table leg. It is generally made up of a square upper section, several beads and coves, a few decorative v-cuts and a curved foot. The transition from pommel or square to the bead happens with a convex curve and then two more side by side but in opposite directions, the right side of the bead and then the left. Those decorative coves that lend a sense of lightness to the leg are a couple of concave cuts, one to the left and another to the right, meeting in the middle. Many legs demonstrate a long “s” curve somewhere along their length. This is, from the top down, a concave cut right, a concave cut left, a convex right left and a convex right. The only thing separating it from a bead and cove is its length. Flats are just a straight line and v cuts are simply two flats that meet at the bottom. All other cuts can now be seen to be mixtures of the three. Why, even a bowl can be seen to be a combination of an inside curve and and outside curve, then a flat along the bottom or perhaps another concave surface with a bead on the edge to give a rim to sit on. So a turner needs to refine and practice those three cuts so as to have mastery in their execution. They will be needed over and over. The tools most used for the cuts are a skew for flats and convex cuts, and gouges for concave cuts. On the other hand gouges may be used for the former cuts as well as the latter. A skew chisel can be used for long cove or concave cuts but a gouge is generally deemed appropriate as it is used for those finer coves especially, where it is difficult to bring the skew to bear. The challenge for the wood turner thus becomes two fold. First a design has to made using only the three elements and that design has to be clean and proportionate and, one would hope, unique. Then those elements need to become second nature in execution so as to leave a surface ready for limited sanding and a fine finish. Darrell Feltmate is a juried wood turner whose web site, http://aroundthewoods.com , contains detailed information about wood turning for the novice or experienced turner as well as a collection of turnings for your viewing pleasure. Birth Announcements

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

By Vera Raposo The front page newspaper headline read: Little Billy Makes His Worldly Debut Wearing Only His Birthday Suit! Proud parents would certainly agree that the birth of their baby should make the cover story of the New York Times! And as much as they’d be okay using a billboard on the side of the freeway as their custom birth announcement, odds are, the newspaper story will be confined to two lines in small print, buried on page 16; and the billboard will actually be a small, but beautiful, hand held custom birth announcement. One of the first decisions new parents make is what to name their baby. Then they decide how they will decorate the nursery. The decisions don’t stop there: cloth or disposable, breast or bottle, which car seat, which baby monitor, do I need a diaper disposal, a baby monitor, wipe warmer, where do I register, which swing, which bouncy seat, which high chair, which preschool, which college, which major? Whoa, whoa, whoa One step at a time; how about just deciding on what you’ll do for a custom birth announcement? You could order them from a number of vendors. The hospital offers some pretty standard plain birth announcements. You could also Google “birth announcements” and you’ll get more decisions many more decisions. Or you could assemble your own. Parents make scrapbooks of their trip to Disneyland; Grandmas artistically put together Baby Brag Books, so why not use those same talents to create a beautiful, one of a kind, custom birth announcement. You should first decide which style you want to use. Will it be elegant with a watermark, frosted cover sheet and a bow? Or perhaps you’d prefer a more comical theme. Do you want fire trucks, baseballs, bunnies or angels? Or would you rather just have a solid color or pattern, so as not to distract from the pertinent data? Will you make them the standard post card size? Or do you plan on using 8″ x 11″ paper and rolling it up like a scroll? Keep in mind ease of mailing when planning your birth announcement. You probably don’t want to pay extra postage for oversized pieces. You also don’t want them so intricate that they get damaged in the postal system. Whether your birth announcement looks like a driver’s license, a wedding invitation or a store grand opening flyer keep it simple. Simple can be beautiful and stylish and the free time you have to be elaborate isn’t as plentiful as it once was pre-baby. Or you could stick with Plan A and send a press release to the editor of the New York Times see how that works for ya! Vera Raposo has been scrapbooking since her oldest child was 5. With tons of scrapbooking tips and ideas, Vera is now sharing some of her best scrapbooking ideas on her radio show at http://www.scrapperstalkradio.com. Treatment for Tuberculosis in Ayurveda

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By Peterson Marky It may affect the bones, the membranes of the brain, leading to meningitis, or the glands when it is called scorfula. It may be caused when a person pricks himself with anything sharp infected the with germs, or inhalation of dust particles mixed with the tiny microbe. As the main factor responsible for the disease is the susceptibility to it, as a constitution weakened by continuous ill-health, a lowered power of resistance, heredity, an unhealthy atmosphere, excessive use of intoxicants, over-indulgence in sex hard work asthma and diseases of the metabolism like diabetes. It is a disease of filth and poverty and does not attack persons living in clean surroundings and having sufficient means to feed themselves properly. In Ayurveda it is called Rajyakshma, the king of disease. Moon, the king among the satellites of the earth, according to our mythology, was supposed to have been afflicted because of a curse of Brahma, the creator and hence the name, Rajyakshma has been given to this ailment. In the early stages of the disease, there is an irritating cough, particularly in the morning, either without an expectoration or with a clear mucus or phlegm. The first sign of the disease is a blood-flecked phlegm accompanied by fever in the evenings and below normal temperatures in the early morning and also night sweats. When the symptoms are aggravated and emaciation has set in, the second stage is supposed to have been reached. If extreme care is not taken and treatment is not done it may spread to the throat and the intestines. The terminal stage comes when the illness reaches deep into the lungs and they are full of cavities. The voice of the patient may become husky at this stage, there may be diahorrea and extreme prostration, with the patient being unable to leave the bed and finally. The death comes because of extensive haemorrhage. The duration of the illness depends on 4 factors (i) The intensity of the infection; (ii) The age of the patient; (iii) The stage at which the disease has been recognised; and (iv) The natural resistance of the body. If the disease reaches the intestines, there is inflammation of the bowels with impairment of digestion, distension of the stomach, rumbling noises in the abdomen and a persistant ache. If the small intestine is involved, the patient is constipated but when the large intestine becomes seat of the ailment, diahorrea is the result. Emaciation increases faster than in pulmonary TB. In scorfula, or TB of the glands, inflammation is the chief characteristic. Tumours form and they suppurate giving a foul smell. When the disease attacks the bones, the bones start crumbling and a state known as caries of the bones results. When it reaches the spine, there is curvature and the patient is unable even to stand erect. TB of the bones affects young people. Treatment of tuberculosis has two faces : (1) preventive, and (2) curative or remedial. The preventive aspect is more social than medical. It is from the slums that the disease starts its fatal march. Provision of clean, healthy surroundings with properly ventilated and clean houses is the first imperative. Detection and isolation of the victims of the disease is the second most important thing that can be done. Thirdly, the diet is of primary importance. Plenty of milk, butter, black gram eggs, ground of the various varieties, turnips, beet root, spinach and other green vegetables, fruits, etc. are the other preventives. As has been stated earlier, it is a disease of filth and poverty. The treatment of a case of tuberculosis must start with the isolation of the patient and his removal to a sanitorium if the disease has been detected at a secondary stage. If that is not possible, he should be housed in an airy room where there is enough sunlight. Garlic is a wonderful drug for in the cure of TB. Thirty grains of garlic boiled in about eight ounces of milk and two pounds of water should be administered in two doses in the day. But the medicine is ready only when the whole decoction has been reduced to one fourth of its original quantity. Ayurveda recommends Vasa (adhatoda vasica) for tuberculosis. One ounce of the juice from the leaves of the drug given thrice in the day with honey provides relief. But the useful drug is Naradiya Mahalakshami Vilasa Rasa which contains traces of gold.
