Coaxing Fresh Vegetables From The Garden All Winter Long

May 1st, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Kenneth Point Autumn typically signals the end of home grown vegetables from the garden, but with a little ingenuity you can harvest garden fresh produce well into the winter months. My Central Pennsylvania garden continues to supply fresh vegetables during the fall and winter when most gardeners in my growing region are content to dream about next summers bounty. Read on to discover simple tricks that will fortify your garden against the onslaught of frigid weather. Fall often delivers brief cold spells with a few days of frost filled mornings, sandwiched between weeks of milder, frost-free weather. The problem is that a single touch of frost can wipe out every tender annual growing in the garden. Fortunately, a little protection will enable frost sensitive vegetables and herbs to survive a cold snap, and reward the resourceful gardener with an opportunity to enjoy extended harvests. Something as simple as the transparent, fleecy, floating row covers used to shield plants from harmful insects can also prevent frost damage. Row covers trap the warmth that radiates up from the earth much like the way that a cloud cover holds temperatures and prevents frost from forming. Row covers offer a few degrees of protection, keeping tender annuals safe from light frost. Use the thicker grade covers for maximum benefit. Late summer is the ideal time to sow cold tolerant vegetables that will flourish in the fall and endure cold weather without complaint. Examples of hardy vegetables for fall gardening include: kale, spinach, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, Brussels Sprouts, kohlrabi, turnips, cabbages, carrots, oriental greens, rutabagas, leeks, and winter lettuces. Once freezing conditions arrive, even cold hardy crops will appreciate some protection if they remain in the garden. Cardboard boxes and fruit baskets can provide shelter to individual plants, while old sheets, blankets, and heavy plastic tarps will protect entire rows or beds of plants. Apply the coverings in the evening when freezes are forecast and remove them the following morning after the sun warms the air. Another effective solution is to use a commercial variety of cloche, or to set up a portable cold frame over the garden bed. Cloches include the heavy glass, bell shaped jars, or variously styled and shaped rigid plastic devices. One style of cold frame consists of a tubular frame covered by a woven poly material with flaps for venting. You can also obtain sturdier cold frames made with aluminum framing and twin wall polycarbonate panels that lift up for venting. Regardless of the type of protection used to cover your plants you must remove it or provide venting during the day as temperatures rise. Resourceful gardeners can combine a few discarded window sashes and bales of straw to create a simple makeshift cold frame. Just arrange the straw bales into a rectangular shape around a garden bed and lay the windows across the top to form an enclosed and insulated growing area. This setup will work great to keep a bed of leafy greens growing further into the winter. Oddly enough, water can protect and insulate plants from the cold. Commercial orchards actually spray water and mist onto their trees to prevent frost damage. In the home garden you can employ plastic gallon jugs filled with water to provide protection. Place the containers around plants, under floating row covers or tarps, and inside of your cold frames. The water will absorb and store heat during the day and release it at night to provide warmth for your plants. Youll get the best results by painting the jugs black so that theyll absorb more energy from the sun during the day. Incredibly, even if the water in the container freezes, it will continue to release a significant amount of heat energy into the surrounding area. Root cellars were once commonly used to store fruits and vegetables over the winter. These dark, underground storage areas with earth floors were designed to keep fresh produce in a state of hibernation. Crops such as potatoes, apples, rutabagas, turnips, beets, parsnips, and carrots would be stacked in baskets or crates. While cabbages, celery, endive, Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, and leeks were lifted from the garden with their roots attached and placed upright, side by side, on the floor of the root cellar. Its amazing how the uprooted plants can maintain their quality and appearance for months with no sunlight, water, or nutrients, while standing on the cold, earth floor of the root cellar. Root cellars arent high on the list of options for home builders any more, but you can recreate the conditions using crawl spaces or unheated storage areas. Barrels or large containers sunk into the ground at an angle and insulated with straw and earth can also serve as improvised root cellars for storing fresh produce. Certain vegetables will survive on their own in the garden through bitterly cold conditions. Leeks, kale, and collards frequently withstand harsh winters without any protection. Fall planted garlic and shallots will develop strong root systems in the fall, spend the winter underground, and then spring up at the earliest signs of the arrival of spring. Many root crops including beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas, and parsnips can be left in the garden protected with a thick layer of shredded leaves or straw. You can then continue harvesting as needed, provided that the ground doesnt freeze and prevent digging. Finish harvesting before spring arrives though, since quality will degrade once the roots resume growing and switch into seed production mode. With proper planning and a little extra care you can easily grow and harvest vegetables beyond the normal spring and summer seasons. Simply implement a few of the ideas presented in this article and youll soon enjoy your own home grown, fresh produce much longer than usual, possibly even year-round. 10 Tips to Make Your Wedding Day in One Piece

April 28th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Alex Daniels Organization is the key to a happy and blissful wedding ceremony. Family is also very important. The more family is willing to give of their time and create less commotion on what they think should be done, the smoother things will be. Here are some top suggestions to help you get through your wedding day in one piece: * Make sure that you have dependable people helping you. Usually the adults in your life are better equipped. * With all of the preparations up to this day, make sure you have focused on your mate. If you know he or she is truly the one, than everything else really does not matter. You cannot control everything so do not worry about what you cannot change. The weather is the only thing you can do nothing about. * Make sure the place you are getting married is agreeable to both of you. You do not want to come to that place and your heart is heavy because you do not want to be married here. * Make sure everyone knows directions to the reception. This should have already been done earlier. * Be sure that your dress fits and you have help getting dressed. Also make sure that you can go to the bathroom in your gown. The rest room has to accommodate you and your beautiful dress. Usually your mother, sister, or maid of honor has to help you. * Get all vendor agreements in writing as a contract. Spell out exactly what you want when you make the bookings. Do not wait until your wedding day. Call a week ahead to confirm the agreement. * For your bridal party, select dependable attendants and give each one a copy of the tentative timeline for the day. Do not have children under three years old to be in the wedding party. If you are unsure of the behavior of the child have one of the attendants walk with the child. * Make sure your parents know what is going on. Nothing is worse then a groom’s mother running around stirring up worry. * Be sure you can dance in your gown and that your shoes are comfortable. You will be on your feet and you do not want to end your wedding because your feet are in pain. * Be sure that all your attendants have a ride to the ceremony. Take into consideration the gowns and a limousine is a wonderful consideration if you can. Have a sense of humor because this will get you in or out of any situation. Personally if you can avoid the alcohol it will avoid a lot of behavior and hopefully any family or friends who do not agree. If you are expected to have beer, wine or alcohol try to control and limit. Remember they are drinking and driving and there is responsibility that has to come with alcoholic beverages. You do not have to have it even though there are those who say you have to. Do what you feel right about. This will eliminate a lot of stress in your wedding day. Good luck! The best laid plans will always fall apart so just plan the best you can, go with the flow and don’t let the bumpy road get to you. You’ll get through it! Cover Materials

April 26th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Ray Schuch Do you know what cover material to choose for your latex mattress? There are two good choices available today, Intense and Amicore Pure. What is Amicore Pure Bedding? Amicore Pure is bedding that helps relieve people that suffer from allergies and asthma. The energy efficient homes of today have been sealed tight for the energy conscious consumer. In these times every penny saved will probably be used to pay some energy bill. While keeping some energy dollars in our pocket, we may actually be providing an environment that increases a habitat for perhaps some of the most common allergens in our country today, odor causing bacteria and the dust mite, for many causing Asthma. Dust mites are in the same Arachnid family as the spider. They are oval shaped and too small to be seen with the naked eye. They just love to burro deep into fibers such as carpet and your mattress. Amicore fibers are injected with the active ingredient. This means that it is not simply sprayed on the outside where it is only a surface treatment. When in the fiber itself, a slow release provides a constant supply to the surface of the material that will last from wash to wash. Amicore Pure bedding keeps beds fresh, soft and pure. You can sleep better knowing that your mattress cover is helping you obtain a healthier sleep environment. Amicore has an organic material called Triclosan, Triclosan has safely been fighting bacteria in mouthwash and toothpaste for many years. This provides a freshness for the fiber wash after wash. Intense Cover Material. Have you ever touched something metal in the winter time and…Zap, you get shocked? That shock is a result of a build up of static electricity in your body. Do you know our bodies can store up to 30,000 volts! That build up can cause most anyone to have trouble sleeping. Studies were conducted on the effect of this build up of static. Intense works by lowering the voltage in the body. Subjects that slept on an Intense mattress slept better and needed approximately 20 minutes less. We feel nervous, agitated we are literally experiencing a feeling of tension. So it is important for the body to get rid of this tension and drop to the lowest possible voltage. And that is exactly how Intense works. The fibers of Intense material uses an ultra fine carbon thread. This filament contains a conductive core wrapped in a nylon envelope. This material captures the electrons nearby and releases them into the air at a lower voltage allowing tension to flow from the body. Just think of the deeper, more relaxing sleep you can enjoy on the Intense covered mattress or topper. You can find both Amocore Pure and Intense cover material at TheBedPro.com. Play Games at My Wedding Reception?

April 25th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Mindy Makuta You can add spice to your wedding reception and have great fun doing it by playing games! Of course, you’ll still have that first dance with your new spouse to the tune from when you first met. And, you’ll still get to eat from each other’s fork when you cut-the-cake. While the bride may play games at her bridal shower with the other “girls”, games are not reserved for showers only. You can use games to encourage conversation among your guests. Games can also help in cases where you want a fully enjoyed reception, yet there are religious or other reasons for limiting your dancing or music. There are basically three types of games that work at a wedding reception. They are: Games for Everyone, The Joke is on the Bride and/or Groom and Outdoor Games (of course for an outdoor wedding). Games for Everyone Pass the Buck - Play musical dollar at each table. Whoever is left holding the $1, wins the centerpiece. Switch the Shoes - The bride and groom may hold up a shoe or garment belonging to the opposite spouse in answer to a what-if question on how they will act in married life. On the Spot Art - Each guest is given a paper and pen and asked to draw another random guest. This works best when they don’t know beforehand the guest being drawn. Guess the Truth - Guests are asked multiple choice questions that have been previously asked of the bride and groom. A show of hands will see how many guests are on target. On the Spot Poetry - Each guest is given a piece of paper and a pen. The paper has the start of a poem like “Sally and Mike met at the fair” The guests complete the poem. Games where the Joke is on the Bride and/or Groom *If you are the bride or groom, let your best man or a bridesmaid read these Give Back the Keys - (This only works if the bride and groom do not yet share a home) The bride and groom is each given a basket. Announce that “Anyone who still has her house keys must give them back.” Lots of guys get up and drop keys in her basket. Only one guy and the groom’s aunt return keys to the groom’s house. Guess the Bride - Blindfold the groom and present him with 5 barefooted persons. He must guess which feet belong to the bride. Choose anyone but the bride to be among the 5 persons. In fact, this is really funny if they are all men. Guess the Groom - Blindfold the bride and ask her to feel 5 men’s faces to guess which belongs to the groom. Choose anyone but the groom to be among the 5 persons. Outdoor Games What you play will depend on where the wedding is and how the guests are attired. A game like croquet is easy to set up in a park or large backyard and is possible in semi-formal clothing. If the wedding is very casual, a park with large grassy area may be great for Volleyball or a huge circle of folks passing a Frisbee. And limbo - with the right music - is great almost anywhere, especially for a Caribbean or beach themed reception. Copyright 2007 by Mindy Makuta. Honeymoon Register - Simple as A B C?

April 22nd, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Vlady Peters No matter what the people in the know say, putting together the Honeymoon Registry is nowhere near as simply as compiling the Bridal Registry. After all, how do you decide your Bridal Registry? Easy. You walk around the house and look at what you have, what needs replacing, what youd really love someone to give you, and theres your Bridal Registry. However, you can hardly walk through your Honeymoon needs, until you actually decide on your Honeymoon. Then, and only then, can you get into the nitty gritty of your Honeymoon Registry. Theres your cost of flight tickets, if youre flying. Theres your patrol, if youre driving. Theres your accommodation wherever youre staying. Theres the admission for this, that, or the other event. Theres the cost of your clothing if youre going to somewhere special like Alaska and need something to cover you from head to toe. Then you need to really search your soul as to just how generous your guests are. If you have some extremely rich and generous uncles, you might decide that between them they might cover your plane tickets. More likely, you will need to divide that amount by ten or more guests so that instead two uncles purchasing a ticket each with $1,000 gift, its more likely to be 10 guests giving you a gift of $200 each. Oh, and theres one more quandary you need to consider. When you put together your Bridal Registry its no big deal if the guests go their merry way and give you something else, or nothing at all. However, in the case of your Honeymoon Registry, you cant wait to make your arrangements after the money comes in. You have to do it when you have to do it, and then keep your fingers crossed when the Honeymoon Registry start bringing in the dollars. Vlady Peters is an author of Honeymoon! Grape Fruit Diet

April 20th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Stoyan Katsarski Excess is never good for health so is it the case for food. This is the reason why people tend to take breaks from the customary diet they take. Such a diet is the grapefruit diet. The grapefruit diet acts as a cleansing one that relieves the body from its typical habit of eating. grapefruit diet is basically a diet consisting of the juicy fruit grape along with green vegetables salads. This highly reduces the junk food intake and the grapefruit diet supplies only the bare essentials for the body only. During a diet, such as a grapefruit diet, the cells of the human body rely for energy upon the stored coffers in the body instead seeking of seeking it from the food intake. This way the excess fat or non required weight of the body gets used up and subsequently lost during a grapefruit diet. In the grapefruit Diet grapefruits are eaten exclusively. The grapefruits are taken, without sugar, as whole fruits, salads, juices or even shakes. The nature of the grapefruit diet never causes gas problems, and thus as many intakes of the food is possible, however provision must be taken as to how much the body really needs. The grapefruit diet sustains the elimination diet plan, which is popularly known as fasting. Thus the grapefruit diet essentially helps the body relieve from toxins and unnecessary wastes inside the body. Many categories of grapefruits are available, which can be utilized in a variety of preparations for grapefruit diet! Some of them can be categorized as Arizona grapefruits, Florida grapefruits, California grapefruits and Texas grapefruits. All of these have diversified tastes but their material wealth for the human body via any grapefruit diet is the same almost. Looking scientifically, the grapefruits act as catalysts, which speeds up the bodys digestion process, and thus the grapefruit diet charges p the body towards a healthy twirl. A lot of water intake is necessary for the grapefruit diet to work essentially and help the body eliminate the toxins and wastes. Also, vegetables and salads, with low or fat free dressings maybe, need to be taken in sufficient quantity to provide the body with solid food requirements. For a grapefruit diet a person must eat significant amount of the diet but not excess! It is wise to divide the total grapefruit diet-eating habit into breakfast, lunch, dinner and Bedtime snack only. grapefruit diet Breakfast may consist of a grapefruit juice or a whole grapefruit along with a boiled egg. Lunch may comprise of a grapefruit juice or a whole grapefruit along with some salads. Again, grapefruit diet dinner may comprise of a grapefruit juice or a whole grapefruit along with some vegetables with low fat dressings and finally Bedtime snack may include only good quality of water and grapefruit juice. Taking quite a look at the grapefruit diet it is clear that its a really good tool for keeping a healthy body. However, it must also be acknowledged that even the healthiest food can be most detrimental if taken in surfeit. So care must be taken to make the grapefruit diet a well balanced and planned for maximizing health. This article is written form a professional weight loss author. Collecting Unique Musical Instruments

April 19th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Ron McCluskey Those of us in western civilizations are accustomed to a large variety of instruments. However, there are many types of instruments that you will never see in any orchestra. They are, however, worth your consideration, both for their uniqueness of structure, but of sound. One of the things that I really wanted to do in Borneo was bring home a number of the stringed instruments that I saw in the shops of Kuching, Sarawak - the sape. But, I did not have enough money at the time. The sape or sapeh is a guitar type instrument shaped somewhat more like a lute. It normally has four strings, but occaisionally has 3 or 5. Several of the tribes in Borneo use this instrument. I saw one man in the Sarawak Cultural Village that made them. He gave us a short concert that was simply enchanting. The sound that was much more common in our travels in Sarawak was the combination of brass gongs and drums. The gongs are sold by Chinese traders up and down the rivers and so at least one set is found in every longhouse. A set of these gongs would be a good addition to any musical instrument collection. Musical instruments are typically found in three different groups - string, wind, and percussion. They can be further divided by the type of material they are made of and whether they are designed to play melody or for rhythm. One unique string instrument that would make a great collectors item would be the gopichand. This unique instrument has a single string and it is held tight by two strips of bamboo. The bamboo is then squeezed together to change the tone of the note. It is typically used for rhythm. This intrument is from Bengal. Another unique string instrument is the Veena from southern India. This instrument has resonance chambers at each end. The Veena (also called Vina) is somewhat like a lute and has a sound like a very mellow sitar. There is one type of instrument that you may already have and not realize it. That is the rain stick. It is made of a hollow tube of wood - often bamboo - with beeds or seeds in it. You tip it back and forth to make a soothing sound. Another type of instrument that is commonly taken home without thinking of it as being a musical instrument is the thumb piano or kalimba. These strange instruments are made by attaching strips of metal into a sounding board. These are then plucked in a downward motion of the thumb to make a tone. They are different sizes so that a melody can be played. Something that I’ve tried to play a couple of times is the didgeridoo. I would love to become adept at playing this unique instrument. It is basically just a tube that the Australian aborigines use to produce a delightfully soulful sound by blowing in it. This one definitely goes in the rhythm section because there is not really any tune possible. Drums come in all shapes and sizes and make noise in more ways than you can imagine. You could make a very interesting collection just of these instruments. You may not decide to make a large collection of unique musical instruments, but you should definitely put them on your list of things to consider bringing home. Our family has traveled on every continent in the world. Youwill want to read about our adventures at ILove Travel Vacations. Understand Your Soil: Healthy Soil Grows Healthy Plants

April 14th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Dan Eskelson A basic understanding of soils allows the gardener to work with natural processes to enhance plant root growth and overall vigor. Soil is an amazingly complex, living ecosystem requiring a balance of organic, inorganic, living and nonliving components. Recent soil science research has demonstrated that the most productive soils are loaded with a variety of microbial life; beneficial fungi, bacteria, yeasts and other microorganisms work to decompose organic matter into humus. Humus directly influences both the assimilation of nutrients and plant resistance to disease, insects, drought and other stresses. Physically, soil should be composed of fifty percent solids and twenty five percent each of liquid and air, with an organic matter content of three to five percent. This side of Iowa, the “ideal” soil is seldom found in the native habitat. In many regions of the country, we are required to amend the soil to provide the optimal growth environment. The various fine-particle clays and silts of benefit greatly from the addition of organic matter. Alkaline clays (high pH) should also be amended with gypsum. The addition of organic matter to sandy and gravely soils is also beneficial, increasing water retention and providing essential nutrients. Initial expense for organic matter and other amendments pays for the continued beauty and health of the planting. New lawn installations should start with basic soil considerations; physical and chemical soil analyses may be desired. Marginal soil conditions in existing lawns can be improved with cultural programs designed for the specific site. Regular aeration, vertical mowing, top dressing with compost or rich soil, proper fertility management and applications of foliar and soil biostimulants are all proven techniques for rejuvenating a poor lawn. A properly balanced soil will support deep, extensive root systems, allowing plants to assimilate all available food and moisture. The result is a thick turf which resists drought, weeds and disease. For basic physical soil analysis, use a soil probe or large, strong knife to cut samples at least six inches deep. Examine for thatch layer thickness, particle size and distribution, compaction and topsoil depth. A minimum of six inches of properly balanced soil is required to grow a healthy lawn. A thatch layer thicker than one-half inch will act like a sponge to limit the penetration of water and nutrients to the root system. If necessary, consult with a qualified landscape professional for help with soil testing. Basic chemical soil tests (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and pH) can be handled through the county extension service. For very thorough soil analysis with written interpretation and recommendations, contact Integrated Fertility Management at (800) 332-3179. What occurs below ground, unseen, largely determines what we see above ground. The knowledge of basic soil conditions is essential to proper cultural decisions and practices. Again, healthy soil grows healthy plants. Shocking News About Male Depression

April 11th, 2008 by ljilyanakwast

By Abbie Frank While much is said about various anxiety and mental disorders, depression is one of the most common. While men are wired differently than women, they can also suffer from the effects of depression while not even recognizing the signs of the illness. This no doubt is due to the need to be well connected and to your emotional side. Depression can impact your body, mood, and even thoughts. Depression, left to its own can develop serious symptoms and side effects while working its way into every part of your life. A depression disorder is not something that can be ignored or hope it goes away. It also usually cannot be treated simply with medication but requires ongoing treatment and support to keep it under control. Over twice as many women as men are diagnosed with depression. This may be due to the fact that men typically are more focused on physical symptoms than the nuances of their emotional state. This is not to suggest that women actually suffer more depression, only that the illness and men goes untreated, much more often. It’s accepted as fact that those diagnosed are a small pool of the total number of people actually suffering from the disorder. So while almost 18 million people are diagnosed with depression, it suggested that many more are living day to day with the illness. Although as stated, twice as many women are diagnosed with depression, men are four times more likely to commit suicide due to the depressive state. This isn’t surprising given that men, starting in adolescence, are far more likely than women to take their own lives. While women in general may attempt suicide, more often, men are much more likely to be successful in their efforts. Although many professional theories exist to explain this fact, one factor may be the tendency to move from thoughts of suicide to action is much faster and men than women. During the time leading up to an actual suicide, men are all so much less likely to exhibit the warning signs such as open discussion of suicide than women. Depression Symptoms May Include 1. Interest in Sex 2. Talk of suicide 3. A sense of Hopelessness 4. Fatigue 5. Restlessness and Irritability 6. Loss of Interest in life’s pleasures 7. Constant Feelings of Sadness or Emptiness They also appear to be much more susceptible to do depression triggered by the work place. This isn’t surprising given the fact that many men associate, who they are with what they do. When what they do is perceived as being threatened, a crisis can be triggered. The Mayo Clinic has suggested that related job stress may be a common cause of male depression. The answer to this most serious consequence of male depression is most likely woven into the very fabric of our society. While the expectations placed on men are considerable, the recognition and benefits associated with their sacrifice for family often goes unrecognized or unappreciated. In the end, there is no one factor that we can point to in regards to this very sad and serious problem. Mental illness is a disease that impacts many of our lives, with devastating consequences yearly. If you or a loved one are suffering from depression, seek professional help as soon as possible.
